Promotions and Transfers
The Del Rio Police Department offers many lateral and promotional opportunities.
Promotion to Senior Officer
A police officer is currently eligible for promotion to the rank of Senor Officer once they have attained two (2) years of service from their hire date as a commissioned police officer for the city. This also requires the passing of promotional written testing with a passing score of 70%.
Promotion to Corporal
A police officer is currently eligible for promotion to the rank of Corporal once they have attained two (2) years of service in the previous position of Senior Officer. This also requires the passing of promotional written testing with a passing score of 70% and completion of an assessment process (interview).
Promotion to Sergeant
A police officer is currently eligible for promotion to the rank of Sergeant once they have attained two (2) years of service in the previous position of Corporal. This also requires the passing of promotional written testing with a passing score of 70% and completion of an assessment process (interview).
Promotion to Lieutenant
Sergeants are eligible to promote to the rank of Lieutenant after two (2) years of service as a Sergeant. This also requires the passing of promotional written testing with a passing score of 70% and completion of an assessment process (interview).
Appointment to Captain
All certified commissioned police officers that have attained (5) years of service from their hire date are eligible for appointment to the rank of Captain.
Requirements and Appointed Positions
Promotion to the ranks of Senior Officer, Corporal, Sergeant and Lieutenant each require passing a written examination and assessment in order to be placed on a promotional eligibility list.
Appointment to the position of Captain is at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Opportunities
After an initial two-year period from being released from the training program, an officer will be eligible to apply for transfer to another division or specialized unit.
