Del Rio Police Academy

If you are not certified through TCOLE and are interested in attending the police academy, we administer a Civil Service Exam multiple times per year.  Details of the exam dates, including study sessions, will be posted at Del Rio City Hall or on the City of Del Rio website when the dates for any upcoming exams are announced.

How long is the Academy?

The Basic Peace Officer Course consists of 720 hours of training and takes 22 weeks to complete. 

What Will I Learn?

Basic knowledge of police systems and practices

02

The Penal Laws of the State of Texas, the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and Traffic Law.

Basic knowledge of defensive tactics along with police professional driving.

What will my schedule look like?

A training week begins on Monday and ends on Friday, though weekend days may be utilized as make-up days. Typically, training begins at 8:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm; however, exceptions will occur for night training and training extending beyond normal hours. Cadets will receive a training calendar, which will provide greater detail regarding the organization of the course.

What type of physical training can I expect?

The Del Rio Police Academy includes a daily physical training component in its curriculum. It is in the interest of every cadet to prepare for the physical training regimen to the best of their ability.

A physical assessment is taken at the beginning of the academy. Cadets will train physically daily. This training will be for cardio, strength and endurance. Cadets will be required to participate in the physical training throughout the entire academy. 

Physical assessments will be conducted throughout the academy along with a Final Assessment at the conclusion of the Del Rio Police Academy. More information on the assessment is given below.

The assessment consists of the following tasks:

The physical assessment administered at the beginning of the academy is the same as the final PT Test given after the 22 weeks of physical training.

Sit-ups

As many as possible within a 1 minute time limit

Pull-Ups

This evaluation is based off standard Cooper Standards for amount of pull-ups

Push-ups

As many as possible within a 1 minute time limit (you can only rest in the up position)

1.5 mile run

This is a timed event, and will need to be done within Cooper Standards

What kind of classes can I expect to take?

The Del Rio Police Academy goes well beyond the minimum required content. You will receive additional hours of training in such areas as Fitness and Wellness, Penal Code, Firearms, Family Violence, Courtroom Testimony, Report Writing, and others.

When I finish the academy, what’s next?

Successful completion of the course with a grade of 80% or higher makes the student eligible to take the State Licensing examination. Once you successfully pass, your department training will begin and you will begin the Field Training Officer Program.

How long is the Field Training Officer Program?

The Field Training Officer Program is approximately 22 weeks. This program consists of 5 phases and multiple evaluations and exams. At the conclusion, you will then be released from the status of recruit
